Racism in American films dealing with African American has been a topic of discussion for a long time in the view of the fact that the viewers, directors, and society had a hold on characters they wanted to see in films. It occurred through the earlier years of film even until now.African Americans have become a great part of America's history for their great Struggle and achievements in changing some systems. Ever since the period of slavery, African Americans have been in the struggle to end segregation, fight for civil rights, voting rights, and fights for rights to exercise other constitutional rights.In the year of 1619, the largest oppressive legal structure in American History came about, the institution of slavery. Although slavery was abolished in the year of 1865, African Americans are still enslaved by intuitional racism. There are systems in place to keep minorities at a disadvantage.
Slavery in the United States first began in Virginia, in 1619, when African slaves were brought to the North American colony of Jamestown (Slavery in America - Black History - History.com, 2009). A Dutch ship had brought 20 Africans ashore to the British colonies which lead to slavery spreading throughout the American colonies.The debates over race and representation of African American in films have been highly contentious for over a century. Blacks have generally been perceived and stigmatized, throughout history, as trouble makers, incapables, intellectually limited, inferior, lazy and irrational, amongst the many other demeaning labels attached to them.
